48. GRENINJA

Franchise / home series: Pokémon

Notable non-Smash games: Pokémon X & Y (2013); Pokémon Sun & Moon (2016, via appearances as Ash-Greninja)

Greninja joined Smash 4 as a representative of the sixth Pokémon generation, selected even before X & Y fully released to the public. Its ninja-frog design and water-shuriken concept made it a natural fit for a fast, agile fighter.

In Smash, Greninja focuses on speed, mobility, and trickery. Water Shuriken provides chargeable zoning, while Substitute (counter), Shadow Sneak, and Hydro Pump give it deceptive movement and ambiguous mix-ups. Its long-reaching tilts and aerials allow for fluid combo routes and edgeguards.

Across Smash 4 and Ultimate, Greninja has found a strong place in competitive play, especially in the hands of players who master its movement and subtle timing-based mix-ups. It offers a blend of offense, mobility, and creativity that mirrors its ninja motif and cements it as one of Pokémon’s coolest modern representatives in the roster.
