19. YOUNG LINK

Franchise / home series: The Legend of Zelda

Notable non-Smash games: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998); The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask (2000)

Young Link debuted in Melee as a smaller, faster version of Link, representing his time-traveling childhood form from Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask. His inclusion provided a youthful contrast to adult Link’s heavier combat style and highlighted the evolving legacy of the Zelda series.

In gameplay, Young Link utilizes a combination of quick sword attacks and rapid-fire projectiles, including fire arrows, boomerangs, and bombs. His speed and nimble aerial movement give him stronger combo potential than adult Link, while his lighter weight and shorter range create a more aggressive, close-quarters feel. His taunts, animations, and voice clips reflect the energetic, adventurous spirit seen in his home games.

Although he did not return in Brawl or Smash 4 (being replaced by Toon Link), Young Link made a celebrated comeback in Ultimate, revitalizing his fast-paced, projectile-heavy gameplay style. His presence highlights the rich history of Link’s many incarnations and offers players a more dynamic, youthful take on the Zelda hero archetype.
