42. WOLF

Franchise / home series: Star Fox

Notable non-Smash games: Star Fox 64 (1997); Star Fox: Assault (2005); Star Fox Zero (2016)

Wolf O’Donnell debuted in Brawl as Fox’s rival and leader of Star Wolf. His rugged design and antagonistic personality gave the Star Fox series a villain representative within the Smash roster.

In Smash, Wolf’s moveset is partially inspired by Fox and Falco but heavily reworked to emphasize strength and menace. His Blaster has a physical hitbox at the muzzle, his tilts and aerials are powerful with strong knockback, and his Reflector is more offensively oriented. This makes Wolf a slower but harder-hitting “space animal” with excellent mid-range control.

Although he was absent in Smash 4, Wolf’s return in Ultimate was met with huge enthusiasm. With refined animations and modernized hitboxes, he quickly became one of the game’s most popular and successful characters at all levels of play. Wolf embodies the appeal of a rival character done right—familiar enough to feel comfortable, but distinct enough to stand fully on his own.
