35. LUCAS
Franchise / home series: Mother (Mother 3)
Notable non-Smash games: Mother 3 (2006, Japan)
Lucas debuted in Brawl as a second Mother-series representative, originating from the Japan-only title Mother 3. His inclusion broadened the series’ representation and brought another emotional, psychic-child protagonist to the roster.
In Smash, Lucas shares some conceptual overlap with Ness but features distinct moves and properties. His PK Freeze, PK Fire, and PK Thunder differ in behavior, and his standard attacks and throws emphasize burst damage and unique hit angles. The Rope Snake grab (in some entries) and strong kill throws give Lucas a threatening close-range presence, while his PK Thunder still provides a steerable recovery similar to Ness’s, with its own nuances.
Lucas briefly vanished from the default Smash 4 roster but reappeared as DLC and returned again in Ultimate, with refined animations and hitboxes. He represents the deeper cut of the Mother franchise and appeals to fans who enjoy a slightly heavier, more explosive variant of the psychic, projectile-based archetype introduced by Ness.
