14. BOWSER

Franchise / home series: Super Mario

Notable non-Smash games: Super Mario Bros. (1985); Super Mario 64 (1996); Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story (2009)

Bowser entered the Smash series in Melee as the heavyweight counterpart to Mario’s roster of heroes. As the King of the Koopas, he brings intimidation, power, and a larger-than-life presence, often appearing prominently in promotional material and character artwork as Smash’s go-to villain archetype.

In Smash, Bowser is the epitome of raw strength. His moveset focuses on heavy-hitting attacks, strong command grabs, and armored options that allow him to power through opponents’ strikes. Early entries portrayed him as extremely slow and cumbersome, but later games refined his mobility and gave him more responsive animations, drastically improving his viability. His iconic Flying Slam (side special) and devastating smash attacks highlight his brute-force identity.

Despite his size making him more susceptible to combos, Bowser maintains a dedicated player base drawn to his explosive kill power and commanding stage presence. Throughout the series, he has evolved into a well-rounded heavyweight who faithfully channels the ferocity and charisma of Mario’s primary antagonist.
