55. DUCK HUNT
Franchise / home series: Duck Hunt
Notable non-Smash games: Duck Hunt (1984)
Duck Hunt (the dog and duck duo) debuted in Smash 4 as a retro representative of the NES light-gun era. Their reveal fully embraced nostalgia and humor, turning the infamous laughing dog into a playable fighter.
In Smash, Duck Hunt is a trap-based zoner built around three primary tools: the clay pigeon, the gunman assist, and the explosive can. These projectiles can be detonated or activated in various ways to create layered traps, combo routes, and stage control. The duo’s normals are quirky but capable, complementing their long-range setups.
The character is one of the more technical zoners, rewarding planning and creative use of angled projectiles. Duck Hunt’s inclusion pays homage to an important part of Nintendo’s early home console history while giving high-level players a unique, setup-rich character to master.
